Things to Do in Drake Bay: What to Book, and in What Order
Every outing in Bahia Drake starts on a boat or a guided trail, so the order you book matters more than the list
The short answer. Drake Bay (Bahia Drake on Costa Rican maps) has three days that matter: one in Corcovado National Park, one at sea around Caño Island, and one night out in the dark, either on a guided forest walk or in a kayak on the bay. Book Corcovado first, because SINAC, the agency that runs Costa Rica's national parks, requires a prior reservation and a certified guide. Book the sea day second, and leave the evening tours for last, because they are the easiest to move around the weather. With four nights you can do all three and still have a slow morning.
Drake Bay has no road out to its sights. Corcovado is a boat ride down the coast, Caño Island is a boat ride out to sea, and the trails near town start where the gravel ends. That is why people who come here for wildlife leave happy, and why people who show up without a plan lose a day on the beach waiting for a boat with an empty seat.
The main things to do in Drake Bay, with time and cost
The durations below are the ones listed on each tour in our catalogue. Prices update on their own when you read this page.
Corcovado: book this one first
Corcovado is the reason most people make the trip, and it is the one day you cannot arrange over breakfast. SINAC's Corcovado page says a prior reservation is obligatory, and its sustainable tourism plan for the park notes that a certified local guide has been required since 2014. So every Corcovado day out of Drake Bay is a guided boat trip, booked ahead.
The Sirena Station day tour costs from $110 per person, and you can book it on its tour page. Have everyone's full name and passport number ready, because the park reservation is made in those names. Before you pay, ask whether the park entrance fee is included or added on the day.
Choosing between the two stations is its own decision. Sirena is the place for tapirs, peccaries and the animals that made Corcovado famous, and the boat ride is longer. San Pedrillo is closer to Drake Bay and quieter, with thick primary forest, a waterfall and better odds for birds. We compared both, including SINAC's note that the Sirena sector can close to visitors in October, in Sirena or San Pedrillo: which Corcovado day to book from Drake Bay.
If you can give it two days, the overnight at Sirena is the strongest version of Corcovado. You are in the forest at dawn and dusk while the day boats are still at sea or already on their way home.

Caño Island: the sea day
Caño Island is a biological reserve off the coast, and the boat out is part of the show. Snorkelers get two guided sessions over the reef and a picnic lunch on the beach. Divers who already hold a certification can book the two tank trip instead. Both are listed at 6 h 30 min.
The sea decides this day. Calmer water and clearer visibility usually come with the drier months, roughly December to April. In the green season, plan for a morning departure that may get moved if the swell is up. Our Isla del Caño snorkeling guide covers what you are likely to see in the water and which tour to pick.

Whales and dolphins
Drake Bay gets two humpback seasons a year. The International Whaling Commission's Whale Watching Handbook lists Drake Bay among Costa Rica's humpback sites, with whales from the Northern Hemisphere arriving December to March and whales from the Antarctic population from July to mid November.
Whales are wild, and nobody can promise one. Travelers who see them tend to call themselves lucky, and they are right. On the snorkel boat to Caño Island you may get a sighting for free. If whales are the main reason you are coming, book the dedicated five hour boat inside one of those two windows and keep a second morning free in case the first one is rough.
Drake Bay after dark
The forest changes at night, and things you would never notice by day come out. Corcovado itself does not allow night walks, so the guided night tour runs in forest outside the park, led by a certified naturalist with controlled lighting. Glass frogs are the classic find. It lasts three hours and suits anyone who can walk a muddy trail in closed shoes.
The bioluminescence kayak needs a dark sky. A bright moon washes out the glow, so check the moon calendar for your dates before you book. We wrote about choosing the right night for bioluminescence near Santa Teresa, and the same moon rules apply here. If your nights fall near a full moon, the sunset kayak is the better evening on the water.

Days without a park reservation
If Corcovado is fully booked for your dates, or you have a spare day, the Tapir Trail hike runs through the biological corridor around the park and needs no park permit. It has morning and afternoon departures. The Rio Claro floating tour is a river day with lunch, and its listing describes it as an adventure tour for people in good shape. Birders should take the eight hour Osa birdwatching day, which starts early and covers forest, coast and riverbanks.
The Sierpe mangroves are the other half of the Osa. The boat that brings most people into Drake Bay crosses the mangroves without stopping, which is why we explained which mangrove riverboat to book instead. The mangrove tour from Drake Bay needs at least four guests to run.
What to do in Drake Bay by traveler type
Couples who want a night inside the park should plan the Sirena overnight, then a sunset kayak and the bioluminescence paddle on a dark night. That makes two quiet evenings on the water for very little effort.
Families with kids who swim usually get more from Caño Island snorkeling and the night walk than from a full Corcovado day, which means long hours of humid hiking at a naturalist's pace. If you want the park with children, San Pedrillo has the shorter boat ride. Ask us how old the kids should be for each tour before you book.
Solo travelers do well here because almost every tour is small and guided. The tours in our catalogue cap groups at six to twelve guests, so you meet people without joining a crowd.
Serious wildlife watchers should give Corcovado two days, add the night walk and the birdwatching day, and treat Caño Island as the rest day.
How many days in Drake Bay
Travelers keep asking the same thing on r/CostaRicaTravel: is four or five days too much for one corner of the country? For people who come for wildlife, it rarely is. Here is how the time usually splits:
| Nights | What fits |
|---|---|
| 2 | One Corcovado day plus one evening tour. Your arrival and departure days take the rest. |
| 3 | Corcovado, Caño Island, and a night walk or bioluminescence kayak. |
| 4 | All of the above plus whales in season, or a slow day on the Tapir Trail or Rio Claro. |
| 5 or more | The two day Sirena overnight, birding, the mangroves, and a spare morning for weather. |
Arrival days are short. Most people come in by boat from Sierpe or on a small plane, and the afternoon tends to disappear. Our guide to getting to Sierpe explains which arrival gets you on the boat, and boat or drive to Drake Bay compares the ways in. Where you sleep matters too, since some lodges are reachable only by boat; we laid that out in where to stay in Drake Bay.
The season
SINAC splits the Osa year into a drier stretch from about mid December to mid April and a long wet season after that. The drier months bring easier trails, calmer crossings to Caño Island and the northern humpbacks. They also bring more visitors, which is when early Corcovado reservations matter most.
From May to November the forest is greener, the boats are emptier and the southern humpbacks arrive from July. The tradeoff is the sea. Boats run on what the morning looks like, so leave room in your plan to swap a sea day for a forest day.
What to book ahead
Book Corcovado as soon as your dates are fixed, especially the Sirena overnight, since meals and lodging at the station are by reservation. Then book Caño Island for a day early in your stay, so a rough sea still leaves time to try again. The night walk, kayaks and Tapir Trail can usually wait until you know the moon and the weather.
Ask us before you lock the dates
Tell us how many nights you have, who is coming, how everyone feels about an hour on open water, and what you most want to see. We will put the Corcovado reservation, the sea day and the evenings in an order that works, and tell you plainly if your dates are better spent somewhere else.
Pura Vida.
