The Sierpe Mangroves: Your Drake Bay Boat Is Not the Tour
A 30,654 hectare Ramsar wetland, the 6 a.m. departure that shows it to you, and the four passengers it takes to leave the dock.
Short answer: the scheduled boat from Sierpe to Drake Bay runs straight through the Terraba-Sierpe mangroves, and it is not a mangrove tour. It carries luggage, it keeps a timetable, and it does not stop for a crocodile. To see the delta itself you book a separate guided riverboat, and you choose the hour by the tide.
Does the Drake Bay transfer count as a mangrove tour?
It does not. A transfer boat has somewhere to be, so it takes the main channel at speed and puts you on the beach landing at Drake Bay. Travelers still enjoy the ride. One on r/CostaRicaTravel wrote that "there were crocodiles sunning themselves near the departure point in Sierpe." Treat that as a preview, not the trip.
What is actually out there
The Humedal Nacional Terraba-Sierpe covers 30,654 hectares of river, estuary and mangrove in Puntarenas province, and it has been on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance since 11 December 1995 (Ramsar Convention, List of Wetlands of International Importance). You see all of it from a boat, because that is how the delta is built: channels threaded between stands of mangrove, with mud where the ground should be.

Our own riverboat trip runs with a certified naturalist and goes looking for crocodiles, river otters and waterbirds. Beyond that, the delta owes you nothing. One traveler's write-up of a Costa Rica trip lists "birds, crocodiles, and a tapir" from the boat. A tapir out there is luck, not an itinerary.
The tide decides what you see
Low water and middle water show you two different places. On a low or falling tide the mud banks are out of the water, crocodiles haul up on them and wading birds work the edges. On a middle tide there is enough depth to turn off the main river into the narrow side channels, where the mangrove closes over the boat.
Travelers who have done it disagree about which is better, and the disagreement is the useful part. One: "Lots of crocodiles if you go at low tide which was really cool!" Another, who has run the trip several times: "don't go neither at high tide nor at low tide, just in between would be perfect."
So decide which of the two you came for. The Instituto Meteorologico Nacional publishes tide tables by coast, including a Pacifico Sur (Osa) table, at imn.ac.cr/tabla-de-mareas. Check your date there, then tell us what you found when you ask about a boat.
Which boat to book
| Option | What you get | Departure | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided riverboat from Drake Bay | certified naturalist guide, riverboat, water and snacks | one 06:00 slot a day, open every day on our booking calendar as of 20 October 2026 | wildlife first, nights already booked in Drake Bay |
| A Sierpe village operator | a boat out of the village docks | set by the operator | staying in Sierpe village, or passing through on the way south |
| Your Drake Bay transfer | the main channel at speed, with your bags aboard | whenever your lodge or shuttle has it booked | getting to Drake Bay, not watching wildlife |
The guided riverboat costs from $110 per person, and the booking refunds in full up to 48 hours before the start time. Six in the morning is not decoration: birds feed early, and the river is flattest before the day heats up.
Sierpe Mangrove Riverboat Tour from Drake BayBahia Drake, Costa Rica
It takes four people to leave the dock
Our riverboat needs four passengers minimum and takes eight maximum. Two of you cannot start it alone. Either you book the four seats yourselves, or you ask us to find a morning when other travelers are already on the boat, which is the part a booking form cannot do for you.
Getting to Sierpe in the first place
Sierpe sits inland on the river, and most people arrive by road and leave by boat. A private transfer from Manuel Antonio costs from $180 per vehicle (up to 4), with pickup at the hour you pick. From San Jose airport it costs from $372 per vehicle (up to 4), and your driver waits at arrivals with a name sign and your flight number.
If you are driving down and want one stop that earns the detour, Finca 6 and its stone spheres sit along the Sierpe road and close on Mondays. We wrote up how to fit the stone spheres into the drive. Coming up the coast by bus instead? Which bus actually stops where on the Costanera is the same problem in a different town.

Where you sleep decides which boat you take
If your nights are in Drake Bay, the guided riverboat climbs back up the river you arrived on, which is why it leaves at six and why it is a morning, not an afternoon. If your nights are in Sierpe village, you are already standing at the dock, and a local operator is the simpler booking.

Ask us before you lock the morning
Tell us your dates, how many of you are traveling, and whether you want crocodiles on open mud or mangrove closing over your head. We will say whether a boat is already running that morning and what the tide will be doing when it leaves.
