Sierpe Mangrove Riverboat Tour from Drake Bay
A half-day riverboat journey through the Sierpe River delta, the largest mangrove forest on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, with crocodiles, otters and waterbirds.
The Sierpe River delta holds the largest mangrove forest on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and it is one of the most underrated wildlife areas in the country. This riverboat tour takes you up a maze of quiet channels where the water runs dark as tea and the mangrove canopy closes over your head.
Keep watch along the roots and banks for American crocodiles basking in the sun, and for Neotropical river otters diving ahead of the boat. Roseate spoonbills, boat-billed herons and ringed kingfishers hunt in the shallows, and your naturalist guide will help you spot the wildlife that hides in plain sight.
The river also carries human history. The Diquís culture lived in this region more than a thousand years ago and left behind its famous stone spheres and petroglyphs, a reminder of how long people have been drawn to this place.
It is a completely different ecosystem from the rainforest or the open sea, which makes it the ideal complement to a Corcovado hike or a day of diving at Caño Island.
