In Santa Teresa, Book the Moonless Night First
The bioluminescence trip only runs when the sky is dark, and the boats leave from the Paquera dock, which you drive to yourself. Here is the order to book a Santa Teresa week in.
Santa Teresa gives you four things genuinely worth putting on a calendar: a surf lesson on the Playa Carmen sand, a canopy run in the hills behind Mal País, a boat day at Tortuga Island, and a night on water that lights up when you move your hand through it. Three of those you can book the morning you want them. The fourth cannot move, because the bioluminescence trip only runs on moonless nights. So pick your dark nights first, then fit the rest of the week around them.
That is the whole planning trick here, and it is the part the "things to do in Santa Teresa" lists leave out.

Why does the bioluminescence tour depend on the moon?
Plankton light is faint. A bright moon washes it out the same way a streetlight washes out stars, so operators on this coast only run the trip on moonless nights. Isla Tortuga Tour, which runs these evenings out of Montezuma, states the rule plainly at the top of its own page: the tour only takes place on moonless nights (islatortugatour.com, checked 6 October 2026).
In practice that means the darkest handful of nights around each new moon, and it means a four night stay can miss the window completely. A couple arriving on the wrong week will read three glowing reviews and find nothing bookable.
This is the one thing to settle before you book anything else. Send us your dates and we will tell you which of your nights are dark, and which operators are running that week.
Our own bioluminescence options, by kayak or by boat, put about an hour and a half on the water. Neither includes hotel pickup. You make your own way to the dock at Paquera, which is where these boats leave from, so the drive is part of the plan rather than something the operator solves for you. The kayak is the version people wish they had chosen. One traveller who took a gulf side bioluminescence trip wrote on Reddit: "It was an AMAZING and magical experience. My only negative is that I wish it had been in a kayak." Dipping a paddle and watching the blade turn blue beats watching it from a seat.
Where these boats leave from, and why it matters
Both the glow trips and the Tortuga Island day sail from the dock at Paquera, on the sheltered east side of the peninsula facing the Gulf of Nicoya. Santa Teresa sits on the open Pacific side, over the hills. There is no pickup on these tours, so getting yourself to the dock on time is the one piece of the day you own, and it is the piece people underestimate.
Travellers notice the gap only once they start looking at the map: "Montezuma and Santa Teresa are almost an hour from Paquera," as one Reddit commenter warned someone planning the same trip. Build that into the morning rather than discovering it at breakfast. If you are not driving yourself, tell us and we will sort the transport across to the dock separately from the tour.
What is the best Tortuga Island tour from Santa Teresa, and what does it cost?
Book the full day version and treat it as a whole day, not a half. Our Tortuga Island tour runs about seven hours door to door and costs from $85 per person, and the boat leaves from the Paquera dock, so the crossing of the peninsula is on you and belongs in the day's budget of time.
What you get for that effort is the one thing Santa Teresa's own coast cannot give you: calm, clear water. The beaches in town are built for surfing, which means current, shore break and sand in suspension. Tortuga is flat and bright, which is why it is the snorkelling day here rather than anything closer.
Two practical notes. Morning departures sit before the afternoon wind, which matters more for comfort than the boat does. And if you are tight on days, there are combined versions that stay out for the sunset and the glow on the way home, which makes a long day with your own drive at both ends. Ask us which shape fits the group you are travelling with before you commit a whole day to it.
Is a surf lesson worth it in Santa Teresa if you already surf?
Yes, for one lesson, for one reason: local water knowledge. Santa Teresa is a long beach break with rip current and shifting banks, and an instructor who reads this stretch daily will put you in the right spot and keep you out of the wrong one. Our Learn to Surf at Paradise Beach session runs about two hours and costs from $80 per person.
This is also the thing Santa Teresa is honestly best at, and the reason the town divides people. A Redditor talked someone out of adding it to a ten day trip with this: "I loved surfing there but if you don't surf it's not like a 'must see' place." That is fair, and it is also why the rest of this list exists. Surf once with a guide, and the town makes sense even if you never paddle out again.

A day with no boat: canopy, forest, and the two days the reserve is shut
Canopy Mal País is the easy half day: about two hours thirty in the hills behind town for from $65 per person, which leaves the afternoon free. It is the most reliable rainy season booking on this list too, since a morning run usually beats the afternoon showers of the green season.
For forest rather than adrenaline, Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve sits at the end of the road past Mal País. Two things decide whether it works for you. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 8am to 4pm, and closed Monday and Tuesday, per the reserve's own published notices. And the trail down to the beach is a real hike with hills in it, not a boardwalk. Entrance for non residents is listed at $12 on the national tourism board's visitcostarica page (checked 6 October 2026); fees are set by SINAC and change, so confirm at the gate.
Cabo Blanco closing two days a week is the quiet trap in a short stay. If your dark bioluminescence night falls on a Tuesday, your Monday and Tuesday forest plan is already gone, and that is exactly why the order of booking matters.
How to order a four night Santa Teresa stay
- Find the dark nights. They set your only fixed appointment of the week.
- Put Tortuga Island on a full day with a morning departure, ideally not the day you fly out, and count the drive to Paquera at both ends.
- Drop the surf lesson into any morning. Two hours, in town, no transfer.
- Use canopy or Cabo Blanco for the leftover half day, checking that it is not a Monday or Tuesday if you want the reserve.
- Leave one day with nothing on it. The road is gravel, the sunsets run long, and the dinner strip is the reason people stay an extra night.
If you are still deciding between bases, our guide to where to stay in Santa Teresa covers which pocket of the road to sleep on, and Montezuma or Santa Teresa compares the two towns for a group. Arriving overland? Which ferry crossing to aim for sets your first afternoon.
The one question to ask us first
Tell us your dates and who is coming, and we will tell you which nights of your stay are moonless, which boats are running that week, how you are getting to the Paquera dock, and whether Tortuga Island or the glow trip is the better use of the one full day you have. That answer changes with the calendar, so it is worth a message rather than a guess.
