Where to Stay in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste: On the Sand, Up the Hill, or Next Door in Coco
Playa Hermosa is small enough that your choice comes down to one thing: what you walk to after dark.
Short answer: Sleep on the beachfront row in Playa Hermosa if you want to walk out of your room onto calm water and eat dinner on foot. Pick a hillside condo or villa if you are a family or a group with a car and you want space and a view. Base next door in Playas del Coco if you want more restaurants and nightlife than Hermosa has. Before any of that, make sure you are booking the right Playa Hermosa.
First, which Playa Hermosa?
Costa Rica has several beaches called Playa Hermosa. This guide covers the one in Guanacaste, on the Gulf of Papagayo, close to Liberia airport. Another Playa Hermosa, just south of Jaco on the central Pacific, is a surf beach with a completely different feel, and it is a long drive south of here. Our own catalogue has a surf lesson at that one, which shows how easily the two get mixed up.
It is a common mix-up. One traveler asked on r/CostaRicaTravel: "Which Playa Hermosa are y'all recommending?" after finding out "there are a couple of them." When you search for a hotel or a rental, check that the address says Guanacaste (often Sardinal or Carrillo) before you pay.
How Playa Hermosa is laid out
Hermosa is a small town in a green valley. The beach curves along a sheltered bay, Playas del Coco sits over the headland to the south and Playa Panamá lies to the north. Most building is on the hills around the valley, not on the sand. People often give directions by the "first" and "second" entrance, the two roads that run down from the main road to the beach.
The scale is the point. A traveler on r/CostaRicaTravel summed it up as "Close to Liberia, quiet beach town... A couple sodas, some restaurants." Another described "about 5 nice restaurants on/near the beach plus a small quiet town." That quiet is why people choose it, and it is also the main tradeoff.
Every beach in Costa Rica is public by law (the Maritime Terrestrial Zone Law, Ley 6043). A beachfront hotel gets you the location, not a private beach.
The three bases compared
| Base | What waking up there is like | Best for | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beachfront row, Playa Hermosa | Steps from the sand and the calm bay, restaurants within walking distance | Couples, families with small children, anyone without a car | Only a few properties sit right on the sand |
| Hillside condos and villas above Hermosa | Ocean views, pools, more space for the money per person | Families and groups who will have a car | You will drive to the beach or face a steep walk back up |
| Playas del Coco, next door | A busier town with many more restaurants, bars and shops | Friends' trips, travelers who want evenings out | The beach is livelier and less calm than Hermosa's |
The beachfront row: for walking everywhere
This is the Hermosa most people picture: a short walk from your room to the water, dinner on foot, the bay going pink at sunset. The row is mostly small hotels rather than big resorts. Bosque del Mar, for example, is a boutique hotel facing the sea on Hermosa beach.
Pick this if you are a couple who wants quiet evenings, or a family who wants to skip the car for a few days.
The hillside: for space and a view
Much of what you find when you search "Playa Hermosa Guanacaste" is condos and private villas on the slopes above the bay and toward Coco. Many have their own pool and room for a whole family or group. Before you book, look at the map closely: a listing that says "five minutes to the beach" usually means five minutes by car, and the walk back up in the afternoon heat is a different thing from the walk down.
Pick this if you are four or more, you are renting a car anyway, and you would rather have a kitchen and a view than a beachfront address.
Playas del Coco: for evenings out
Coco is the busier neighbour, and the town travelers usually compare with Hermosa. The way one traveler put it: "Playas del Coco has way more going on during the day and at night, but the beach isn't as nice as Hermosa." Another noticed that rentals in Coco often came in cheaper than the ones they had first looked at in Hermosa. Prices change week to week, so compare the exact dates you want.
Pick Coco if your group wants several dinner options within walking distance and a bar after, and is happy to drive over to Hermosa for a calm beach day.
What about the all-inclusives?
Hermosa itself is small hotels, condos and rentals. The big all-inclusive resorts are spread around the wider Gulf of Papagayo, and the famous names on the Papagayo Peninsula are not all-inclusive at all. If an all-inclusive week is what you want, start with our guide to where to stay in Papagayo, and if you are traveling with kids, read which Papagayo all-inclusives take children before you book.
What a stay here costs
We do not print hotel rates here because they change daily and by season. Ask us with your dates and we will check current options. The parts of the trip we sell directly have live prices:
| What | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer, Liberia airport (LIR) to Playa Hermosa | from $72 per vehicle (up to 4) | Per vehicle for up to 4, scheduled at about 30 minutes; extra passengers cost more, up to 8 |
| Private transfer, Playa Hermosa to Liberia airport | from $72 per vehicle (up to 4) | Pickup at your hotel at the time you choose |
| Private transfer, Liberia airport to Playas del Coco | from $84 per vehicle (up to 4) | If you base in Coco instead |
| Tapir Valley night walk from Papagayo | from $160 per person | About five hours, with dinner |
That short airport run matters for where you stay. Hermosa works well as a first or last night in Guanacaste: an afternoon landing can still leave you time on the beach, and a slow morning by the water fits before an afternoon flight.
The Tapir Valley walk is the one evening worth leaving the bay for. It runs after dark in a restored reserve near Tenorio Volcano, where you may see a Baird's tapir come out to feed while the frogs start up.

If you want a day out on the water, our guide to the Playa Flamingo catamarans explains why the hour you sail changes the snorkeling. And if you are still deciding between Hermosa and a busier Guanacaste town, read where to stay in Tamarindo for the contrast.
How to book
- Decide your base first: beachfront row, hillside, or Coco. The table above is the shortcut.
- Check the address says Guanacaste, not Jaco or Puntarenas.
- If you rent a hillside place, check the real walking route to the sand on a map, not the "minutes to the beach" in the listing.
- Book your airport transfer with your arrival time, or let us fit it around the rest of your route.
If Hermosa is one stop in a longer trip, say Arenal first and Guanacaste after, the order and the drive between stops matter as much as the hotel. Tell us who is traveling, your dates and what you want your evenings to look like, and we will tell you which side of the headland to sleep on. Ask us.
