San Luis Obispo is a city on the Central Coast of California, roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It grew up around Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded by Franciscan missionaries in the eighteenth century, which still stands in the heart of downtown. The city is known for its walkable historic center, weekly farmers market, and nearby wine country and beaches, and is a common base for exploring the surrounding coast and hills.
