Where to Stay in Tambor: the Resort, Los Delfines, the Village, or Montezuma
Tambor is four different stays on one quiet bay. Pick the one that matches how you want to spend your evenings and whether you plan to drive.
The short answer: Tambor sits on Bahía Ballena, a calm, sheltered bay on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, and it has very little town. Where you sleep decides how your days go. Stay at the Barceló Tambor if you want everything on site and no car. Rent a house in Los Delfines if you are a family or a group that wants a kitchen and a pool. Pick a small hotel by the village or up in the hills if you are a couple who wants quiet. And if you want restaurants you can walk to, base yourself in Montezuma, about half an hour farther down the peninsula, and visit Tambor's beach for the day.
The four bases at a glance
| Base | What it is like to wake up there | Best for | Do you need a car? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barceló Tambor | A large all-inclusive resort right on Playa Tambor | Families and anyone who wants meals, pool and beach in one place | Not for the resort itself; yes to explore |
| Los Delfines | A gated golf community of houses and condos, many rented to visitors | Families and groups who want a kitchen, space and often a private pool | Yes, realistically |
| The village and its edges | A handful of small hotels near the beach road, plus lodges in the hills and on quieter beaches nearby | Couples and slow travelers | Yes, unless your hotel arranges everything |
| Montezuma | A small, walkable beach town with cafes, waterfalls and rougher surf | Travelers who want to walk to dinner | Less so in town; yes for day trips |
Barceló Tambor: the easy option on the beach
The Barceló Tambor is the area's big all-inclusive, run by the Spanish Barceló chain and set right on Playa Tambor (Barceló, checked 31 October 2026). The bay in front of it is sheltered, so the water is usually calm enough for children to swim, which is not something you can say about much of this coast.
It suits travelers who want to land, unpack and stop deciding things. Meals, pool and beach are all in one place, and you do not need a rental car to enjoy the resort. The tradeoff is that Tambor has very little outside the gate, so a stay here works best as a rest week, with a tour or two booked for the days you want to get out.
Before you assume the all-inclusive is the expensive choice, compare its total for your dates with a room-only boutique hotel plus dinners out. The gap is often smaller than people expect.
Los Delfines: a house, a pool and a short walk to the beach
Los Delfines Golf & Country Club is a large gated community next to Tambor, with a golf course and rows of houses and condos. Some owners live there year round, and many units are rented to visitors through the usual rental platforms. Many rentals have their own pool, and the community is close enough to walk to Playa Tambor.
This is the base for families and groups of friends who want to cook, spread out and set their own pace. It is also the base where a car matters most. Tambor stretches along Route 160 rather than clustering around a plaza, and there are only a few restaurants, so plan to shop and drive. Paquera, on the way in from the ferry, is the practical place to stock up on groceries and cash before you arrive.
The village and the quiet edges: small hotels for couples
Tambor's village is little more than a short road down to the beach, with a church, a small grocery and a few places to eat. Around it are the small hotels that make the area appealing to couples.
Tambor Tropical Beach Resort is an adults-only hotel on the beach near the village, with wooden buildings and a pool facing the sea. It is the closest thing Tambor has to a romantic beachfront stay you can walk out of.
Lodge Margouillat sits in the forested hills at Pánica, with villas and bungalows set among the trees. You trade the beach on your doorstep for quiet and birdsong, and you will drive down to swim.
Tango Mar is a little past Tambor on Playa Quizales, with suites and villas from the hillside down to the sand. It is the more upscale choice if you want a beach that feels like your own.
On the north side of the bay around Pochote, Los Vivos and a scatter of rentals give you the same calm water with even fewer people around.
Scarlet macaws feed in the beach almond trees along this stretch. Isla Tortuga, the white sand island most visitors here give a day to, lies a short boat ride up the gulf coast, and some tours collect guests right on the beach at Tambor. Our Isla Tortuga guide explains how the day works and what is and is not included.

Or stay in Montezuma and visit Tambor
If the idea of a quiet bay with nothing to walk to makes you restless, look at Montezuma, about half an hour farther south. It is still small, but it has a real main street of restaurants and cafes along the beach, a bohemian mood, and the waterfalls just outside town. The beach is rockier and the waves bigger than at Tambor, so for calm swimming you drive back up the coast.
Montezuma also has more accommodation choice, from simple places in the village such as Hotel El Jardín to resorts just outside it like Aves Resort and Ylang Ylang Beach Resort. If you go this way, read our guide to the Montezuma Waterfall's three falls and two trails before you hike.
Montezuma is also where Toorizta's transport on this part of the peninsula runs. A shared shuttle from San José airport or your San José hotel crosses on the ferry and drops you at your hotel (from $72 per person), and private transfers run from San José airport (from $360 per vehicle (up to 4)) and from Liberia airport (from $324 per vehicle (up to 4)). If you are staying in Tambor instead, ask us how to get to your door.

What a stay in Tambor costs
Hotel rates here move with the season and the day, so we will not print a nightly price that could be stale by the time you read it. The pattern, though, is steady. Small lodges in the hills, like Lodge Margouillat, are the gentlest on the budget. Los Delfines rentals vary widely with size and season, and they get better value the more people share them. The adults-only beachfront hotels and Tango Mar sit at the top of Tambor's range, and the all-inclusive often lands closer to them than you would guess once meals are counted. Montezuma's beachfront resorts can run higher still.
Compared with Santa Teresa on the other side of the peninsula, the Tambor area is generally the quieter and less expensive coast. Prices rise in the dry season, December to April, and around Christmas and Easter, when Costa Rican families also come to the beach.
How you get here shapes where you should stay
Most travelers arrive by road and the Puntarenas to Paquera car ferry, then drive south on Route 160 through Tambor. Our guide to getting to Santa Teresa on the ferry covers the crossing in detail; Tambor is on the same road, closer to the dock.
If you would rather fly, Sansa's current destination list names Cóbano (ACO), the airstrip that serves this end of the peninsula (Sansa destinations, checked 31 October 2026). Check the schedule and baggage rules before you build your plan around it.
That arrival question feeds straight back into your base. Arriving by ferry and staying a week? A car opens up Los Delfines, the hills and Montezuma. Flying in and staying put? The all-inclusive or a hotel that arranges your transfers makes more sense.
How to book
Book Tambor hotels directly with the property or through the platform you already trust, and Los Delfines houses through the rental sites where their owners list them. Read the cancellation terms closely for dry season dates. If you would like us to check what is open for your dates, we can do that too.
The harder part is fitting the pieces together: the ferry or flight, the car or the transfer, which base suits your group, and which days to give to Isla Tortuga, Curú or Montezuma. Tell us who is traveling, how many nights you have and what a good day looks like to you, and we will tell you which of these four bases we would choose. Ask us.
