Leaving the Caribbean Coast: Drive Five Hours, or Fly From Limón?
Limón has an airport, and on departure day that is the whole decision
Limón has a working commercial airport, and Sansa flies it to San José in about 40 minutes (flysansa.com, Puerto Limón destination page, read 19 October 2026). Our road shuttle from Puerto Viejo to San José is scheduled at five hours. If your flight home leaves SJO, those two numbers are most of the decision.
Flying will not save you money. It buys back most of a day, and it takes the mountain crossing out of your departure morning.
Should you fly out of Limón or drive to San José?
Fly if your international flight leaves SJO before mid afternoon, or if a five hour van ride with tired children is the part of the trip you are already dreading. Drive if your flight is in the evening, if there are four or more of you paying per seat, or if you are travelling with boards and a week of beach luggage that a small aircraft may not accept.
The two departure days, side by side
| Fly from Limón | Drive to San José | |
|---|---|---|
| Ground ride | Puerto Viejo to Limón airport, scheduled at 1 hour | Puerto Viejo to San José, scheduled at 5 hours |
| In the air | about 40 minutes | none |
| Our shuttle | from $35 per person | from $60 per person |
| Airfare | booked with Sansa, separately | none |
| Baggage | small aircraft limits apply | boards and extra bags cost extra |
Both shuttle times above are the scheduled durations on our own transport products, not estimates.

How the connection works
Sansa calls San José the starting point of its flight network, and that matters more than it sounds. Your domestic hop lands at SJO, the same airport your international flight leaves from, so nobody is crossing the city with suitcases to reach a second terminal.
It is still a separate ticket. A delay on the Limón leg is yours to absorb rather than the airline's to rebook, so leave real margin. A same day connection works. A same hour connection does not.
Our shuttles to the airstrip are built around that hop. The Puerto Viejo run is scheduled at one hour, Cahuita at 30 minutes, and Punta Uva or Manzanillo at 90 minutes. The morning and afternoon departure times you see listed are approximate on purpose, because we match your pickup to your Sansa flight rather than to a fixed timetable.
What the small plane will not do
Sansa asks passengers to "check in advance the weight, size, and quantity restrictions for baggage that apply to the fare you purchased", and to keep documents, medication and electronics in carry on (flysansa.com, passenger recommendations, read 19 October 2026). Allowances on these aircraft are tighter than the ones you cleared flying in from home. Confirm yours with the airline before you commit a family to this plan, because surfboards and six beach bags are usually where the idea falls apart.
The airline also says the number of daily San José flights changes with the season. Check the live timetable for your own date rather than trusting a number you read anywhere, this page included.
When the road still wins
Four people flying means four fares on top of four shuttle seats. The road shuttle is one ride at one price per seat, with no baggage conversation at the counter.
An evening flight home changes the arithmetic too. Leave Puerto Viejo after breakfast and five hours puts you at SJO in the early afternoon with margin to spare, which is exactly what the drive is good for.
Route 32 is the catch. It is the only quick road between this coast and the Central Valley, and it can close for landslides. We went through the closures and what the detour costs you in Getting to Limón: the one road in, and the days it closes. If the road is shut on your departure morning, the plane stops looking like an indulgence.
Which shuttle to book, and how
We run our own shared shuttles on this coast rather than reselling a seat in someone else's van, which is why a pickup can be matched to a flight time at all. Three of them feed the Limón airstrip:
- Puerto Viejo to Limón airport, scheduled at one hour. from $35 per person
- Cahuita to Limón airport, scheduled at 30 minutes. from $35 per person
- Punta Uva or Manzanillo to Limón airport, scheduled at 90 minutes. from $40 per person
Each one includes the driver, an air conditioned vehicle, door to door pickup and tolls. Cancellation is a full refund up to 48 hours before the start time. Hold the flight first, book the shuttle second, then send us the flight number so your pickup lands in the right hour.
If you are arriving rather than leaving
The same hop runs inbound, and that is where it changes a trip most. You land at SJO, connect to Limón, and reach Cahuita or Puerto Viejo in about 30 minutes from the airstrip on our Limón airport shuttle. The difference is a first afternoon with your feet in the Caribbean instead of a first evening watching the rain on Route 32 through a window.
Ask us
Send us your flight number and where you are sleeping on the coast, and we will tell you whether the plane is worth it for your group or whether the road shuttle is the better call. We would rather talk you out of a flight you do not need than sell you one. Message us and we will work backwards from your departure hour.
