Flying Into Limón: the 40 Minute Hop, and the Hour After It

Sansa's San José to Limón flight takes a road day off your arrival. Your bed is still 30 to 90 minutes of coast road away, so book that leg at the same time.

Sansa flies San José to Limón in about 40 minutes, daily, which takes most of a road day off your arrival. Then you land in Limón city, and Limón city is almost certainly not where you booked a room. Cahuita is about half an hour further south, Puerto Viejo about an hour, Punta Uva and Manzanillo about an hour and a half. The flight is the easy half of this plan. The hour after it is the half people forget to book.

Fly, or drive?

Fly if you are two people with ordinary suitcases, your bed is somewhere between Cahuita and Manzanillo, and you would rather spend the first afternoon in the water than watching trucks climb out of the Central Valley.

Drive, or take a ground shuttle the whole way, if you want a car for the week, if you are four or more and a per person fare stops making sense against one vehicle, or if you are travelling with surfboards, dive gear or big cases. The luggage rules below are the real decider for most people, and almost nobody mentions them.

What Sansa actually flies to Limón

Sansa's Limón page says it operates direct San José to Limón flights with a flight time of about 40 minutes, and that it flies the route daily (flysansa.com, read 18 October 2026). The same page says the number of daily flights changes with the season, so check your own date on Sansa's booking screen rather than a frequency someone quoted in a forum thread two years ago.

Two things that page does not promise, and that shape your day:

Sansa carries your bags between airports only. Its passenger recommendations say the baggage service "is limited exclusively to transportation between airports served by the company" with no ground distribution outside airport facilities (flysansa.com, read 18 October 2026). Your luggage lands where you land, and the rest is on you.

The flight is 40 minutes. Your trip to the coast is not. Which brings us to the part that goes wrong.

The hour after you land

Limón airport sits by the city, and the southern Caribbean coast that most people are actually going to starts further down the road. We run shared shuttles on exactly these legs, in an air conditioned vehicle with WiFi, one morning and one afternoon departure, and the pickup time is matched to the Sansa flight rather than to a fixed timetable:

Cahuita to Limón airport, about 30 minutes, from $35 per person.

Puerto Viejo to Limón airport, about an hour, from $35 per person.

Punta Uva or Manzanillo to Limón airport, about an hour and a half, from $40 per person.

Read those durations in either direction when you are working out your day: an hour of coast road is an hour whichever way you point the van. They are sold as the run to the airport, which is the leg travellers get stuck on, because a flight home will not wait while you find a taxi in Puerto Viejo.

If you are flying out, work backwards from your Sansa departure and tell us the flight number when you ask. If you are flying in, send us the arrival time rather than the date.

Cahuita is the shortest leg from the airport, which makes it the easiest place in the region to reach on a flying day, park gate and reef included.

Cahuita National ParkPuerto Viejo, Costa RicaCahuita National Park , located on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, is a pristine paradise where lush rainforests, coral reefs, and white sandy beaches converge. Named after the nearby town of Cahuita, this protected area encompasses a rich diversity of ecosystems and offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and biodiversity of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. The luggage rules that decide this for you

This is the part that sends families back to the road, and it is all published. From Sansa's baggage FAQ (flysansa.com, read 18 October 2026):

One personal item on board per passenger, maximum 30 by 50 by 20 cm, maximum weight 10 lb (4.5 kg). Between 10 and 15 lb an extra fee applies. Anything over 15 lb (6.8 kg) has to be checked.

Checked bags must not exceed 76 by 46 by 34 cm, and the weight you are allowed depends on the fare you bought, so check the fare rules before you pack rather than at the counter.

Sports equipment, special baggage and oversized items have to be coordinated in advance to confirm operational availability, per Sansa's passenger recommendations. If you are bringing a board to Puerto Viejo, that call happens before you buy the ticket, not at check in.

A 10 lb personal item is a day bag with a camera in it. If your hand luggage is a laptop, a camera and a week of medication, you are already at the limit, and that is worth knowing before you pick the plane over the van.

When the road still wins

A car changes the shape of a Caribbean week. Punta Uva, Manzanillo and the Gandoca road are a lot easier with your own wheels than with a taxi each time, and a rental car cannot fly with you. If you want that freedom, drive the whole way, and read the one road in and the days it closes first, because Route 32 is the quick way and it is also the road that shuts for landslides.

Travellers on r/CostaRicaTravel and r/costarica routinely put the San José to Puerto Viejo drive at four to five and a half hours depending on trucks, weather and where exactly you start (threads read 18 October 2026). That is a morning gone, which is why the flight tempts people, and it is also a morning you can use if you break the trip somewhere rather than racing the light.

If your inbound international flight lands late in the day, the decision may already be made for you. We wrote about how your landing hour picks your ride in leaving SJO. The same logic applies here: a domestic hop you cannot physically connect to is not a shortcut.

How we would plan it

Tell us three things and the answer is usually obvious within a message or two: where you are sleeping on the Caribbean side, how many of you there are, and what you are carrying. If it is two of you with carry on bags and a room in Cahuita, the plane plus a shuttle is a clean arrival day. If it is four of you with a cooler, boards and a plan to drive to Manzanillo at sunset, the road is the honest answer and we will tell you so.

Ask us and we will work the hours backwards with you, flight number and all.

Pura Vida!
