Getting to the Papagayo Gulf: Land at Liberia, Not San José

Every way into the gulf from LIR and SJO, by private transfer, flight, bus, shuttle or your own boat, and which one fits your arrival

If you can choose your airport, choose Liberia. Guanacaste Airport (LIR) is the closest international airport to the Papagayo Gulf, and our private transfer from the terminal to a gulf hotel is scheduled at about 40 minutes. Fly into San José (SJO) instead and you are looking at either a domestic flight to Liberia or most of a day on the road.

That is the short version. The rest of this guide covers every way in, what each one costs where we sell it, and the arrivals where the obvious choice is the wrong one.

From Liberia airport (LIR)

Most people who stay on the gulf fly into LIR, and from the terminal the ride is short. It is mostly highway, and your driver does not have to cross the Central Valley first.

The private transfer. Our Liberia airport to Papagayo transfer is from $78 per vehicle (up to 4). That price covers up to four passengers, and the vehicle takes up to eight with a small charge for each extra person. Your driver meets you at arrivals, you pick the pickup time, and you go door to door in an air-conditioned vehicle. The catalog lists pickups from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. If your flight lands outside that window, message us before you book anything.

Some nearby addresses are priced separately because the drive is different:

Going home is the same ride in reverse: from $78 per vehicle (up to 4).

The bus. It can be done, but there is no beach bus at arrivals. You take the city bus from the terminal into Liberia, then a second bus out to Playa Hermosa or Playa Panama, then walk or take a taxi to your door. Buses do not drive into the private Peninsula Papagayo development. We cover each leg, and why we don't print the timetable, in LIR to the Papagayo Gulf: There Is No Bus From the Terminal.

A rental car. Pick it up at LIR and drive yourself. Whether it is worth paying for depends on how many days you plan to leave your hotel, not on the airport run. Do You Need a Rental Car at Papagayo Gulf? Count Your Off-Resort Days works through that decision.

From San José airport (SJO)

San José often has the better international fare, and that is how many travelers end up there with a hotel booked on the gulf. You then have three options.

Fly to Liberia. Sansa runs direct San José to Liberia flights with a flight time of about 50 minutes, every day, and says it may run up to eight a day depending on the season (flysansa.com, Liberia page, read 1 November 2026). Small planes carry tight baggage limits, so check your allowance before you pack. Once you land at LIR, take the same transfer as above. If you arrive on a long international flight, this is the gentlest way to reach the gulf the same day.

Go by road. The gulf sits past Liberia on the same northbound corridor that serves the rest of Guanacaste. We don't currently list a scheduled SJO to Papagayo transfer, so we quote it for your date. Our nearest scheduled comparison, San José airport to Tamarindo, is set at about four and a half hours. Plan on a similar half day, and longer if you leave the Central Valley in afternoon traffic. If your international flight lands in the afternoon, driving means finishing the trip after dark on roads you don't know, and a night near SJO followed by a morning departure is often the calmer plan.

Take the bus. Pulmitan de Liberia runs a direct San José to Playas del Coco route. Third-party schedule sites list a handful of departures a day and a ride of more than five hours, but the times they publish don't agree with each other. Confirm at the Pulmitan terminal in San José, which is in the city and not at the airport. From Coco you still need a taxi to most gulf hotels.

Arriving from elsewhere in Costa Rica

Plenty of people reach the gulf at the end of a loop rather than straight off a plane.

  • From Arenal / La Fortuna, our shared shuttle to Liberia is from $62 per person, about three and a half hours, with one departure a day.
  • From Monteverde, the shared shuttle to Liberia is from $62 per person, also about three and a half hours and once a day.
  • From Tamarindo, the shared shuttle to Liberia is from $35 per person, about 90 minutes.

These shared shuttles stop at Liberia airport or a Liberia hotel, not on the gulf. If you want one vehicle from your last hotel to your next, ask us for a private door to door instead. For the wider picture of moving around the country, see getting around Costa Rica by rental car, shuttle or bus.

By sea

There is no scheduled passenger boat or ferry into the Papagayo Gulf. The only way to arrive by water is on your own vessel. Marina Papagayo, on Peninsula Papagayo, says it has 180 serviced berths for yachts up to 250 feet (peninsulapapagayo.com, marina page, as listed 1 November 2026). For a day on the water once you are here, that is a separate booking. A charter such as our full-day yacht charter is a tour, not a way to arrive.

Which shuttle or transfer company should you book?

Use an operator who is authorized to carry tourists, quotes a fixed price per vehicle in writing, tracks your flight, and confirms child seats by age and weight. Guanacaste Airport tells travelers to use only authorized transportation services, which you can recognize by their credentials and company uniforms. Our LIR arrival guide names the providers on the airport's list.

We coordinate private transportation as part of planning a trip, so these are the questions we already ask on your behalf. To book with us, open the transfer page from the price above, or send us your flight details and hotel name and we'll arrange it.

The three details that change the answer

  1. Your exact property. "Papagayo" covers the gated Peninsula Papagayo, beach towns such as Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama, and a few hotels that use the name but sit well north of the gulf. Read the street address on your confirmation, not the brand. If you are still choosing a hotel, our Papagayo Gulf where-to-stay guide compares the peninsula, Culebra Bay and the beach towns.
  2. Your landing time. A midday landing at LIR turns into an afternoon at the beach. A late landing at SJO turns into a night drive or an extra night near the airport.
  3. Whether you'll leave the gulf during the week. That decides whether you need a car, not the airport.

If you are still choosing between airports, our guide to getting to Liberia compares LIR and SJO for all of northern Guanacaste.

Send us your flight, your landing time and the hotel address on your confirmation. We'll tell you which way in fits that arrival and set up the ride.
