Getting to Liberia: Land at LIR, or Spend a Day Getting There From San José

Every way into Liberia and Guanacaste, from both airports, with drive times from our own transfer schedules and which ride fits your group

Article · · 8 min read

Quick answer: If your trip is in Guanacaste, fly into Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR). Our private transfers from LIR are scheduled at about 40 minutes to the Papagayo Gulf, an hour and a quarter to Tamarindo and three hours to Arenal or Monteverde. Landing in San José (SJO) means adding a domestic flight, a long bus ride or most of a day at the wheel. Once you are at LIR, the size of your group decides the ride. A shared shuttle charges per seat and a private transfer charges per vehicle for up to four people, so the more of you there are, the sooner the private transfer is the better deal.

Liberia is two places in one name: the provincial capital of Guanacaste and the international airport a short drive west of town, on the side facing the beaches. Most travelers who say "getting to Liberia" mean the airport, so that is where this guide starts. For the country-wide picture of airport pickups from both SJO and LIR, our Costa Rica airport transfer guide covers how a meet-and-greet transfer works.

Which airport should you fly into, LIR or SJO?

Fly into LIR if most of your nights are on the northern Pacific coast: the Papagayo Gulf, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, Flamingo, Conchal or Tamarindo. Fly into SJO if your trip centers on the Central Valley, Manuel Antonio, the Caribbean or the south. Arenal and Monteverde work from either airport, so pick the one your coast is closer to.

If you are staying in Better airport Why
Papagayo, Coco, Playa Hermosa LIR Under an hour by private transfer
Flamingo, Conchal, Tamarindo LIR About an hour to an hour and a quarter
Nosara LIR About two and a half hours by private transfer
Arenal / La Fortuna, Monteverde Either About three hours from LIR
Santa Teresa, Montezuma SJO, usually About four and a half hours by road from LIR, and the ferry route from the SJO side is often simpler
Manuel Antonio, Puerto Viejo, the south SJO Guanacaste is the wrong end of the country

Drive times here are the durations on our own transfer listings. Traffic, roadworks and the rainy season can stretch them.

From Liberia airport: private transfer

A private transfer is the simplest way out of LIR. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign and tracks your flight. You load the bags into an air-conditioned vehicle that is yours alone and go straight to the hotel. The price covers the vehicle for up to four passengers, with a small fee for each extra person up to eight.

From LIR to Drive time Price
Playa Hermosa about 30 min from $72 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playas del Coco about 30 min from $84 per vehicle (up to 4)
Papagayo Gulf hotels about 40 min from $78 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playa Conchal about 1 h from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playa Flamingo about 1 h 15 min from $106 per vehicle (up to 4)
Tamarindo about 1 h 15 min from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
Nosara about 2 h 30 min from $204 per vehicle (up to 4)
Arenal / La Fortuna about 3 h from $228 per vehicle (up to 4)
Monteverde about 3 h from $216 per vehicle (up to 4)
Santa Teresa / Montezuma about 4 h 30 min from $324 per vehicle (up to 4)

One timing detail matters for late flights. The Papagayo and Playa Flamingo transfers list pickups between 8 am and 9 pm. If you land after that, ask us before you book anything.

If you are deciding where on the gulf to sleep, our guide to where to stay in Papagayo explains how the peninsula hotels differ from the all-inclusives around the bay.

From Liberia: shared shuttle

A shared shuttle sells you a seat instead of the whole vehicle. It is the cheaper choice for one or two people and gets more expensive per group as the group grows. Expect pickups to follow the shuttle's schedule rather than your flight, and stops at other travelers' hotels along the way.

Route Time Price
Liberia to Tamarindo about 1 h 30 min from $35 per person
Liberia to Arenal / La Fortuna about 3 h 30 min from $62 per person
Liberia to Monteverde about 3 h 30 min from $62 per person

The Arenal and Monteverde shuttles run once a day, with pickup around 9:30 am. That suits a night in Liberia first. It does not suit an international flight landing the same afternoon. The Tamarindo shuttle charges extra for surfboards and extra bags, so mention the board when you book.

Families often get stuck on this question, so here is how to work it out. Multiply the shared seat price by the number of people in your group and compare the total with the private transfer to the same place. For couples the shared seat usually wins. For a family of four with a car seat and a pile of bags, compare the two totals before you assume the shuttle is cheaper.

Tamarindo beach

Tamarindo itself splits into very different bases (the busy strip, Langosta and Playa Grande), and the ride you book depends on which one you choose. Our guide to where to stay in Tamarindo sorts them out.

From Liberia: rental car

A car makes sense if you plan to move around Guanacaste on your own schedule: beach to beach, out to Rincón de la Vieja, back for sunset. It makes less sense if you will spend the week at one resort, where you would be paying for a car that mostly sits in the parking lot.

Two things are worth checking before you land. Ask your rental agency whether its desk is in the terminal or a shuttle ride away, because that changes how long you wait at arrivals. And if your flight lands late, think about whether a first drive in the dark on roads you have never seen is worth it. Taking a transfer that first night and picking up the car the next morning is one way around it.

From San José (SJO): three ways to reach Liberia

If your international flight lands at SJO and your trip is in Guanacaste, there are three realistic ways north.

Fly. SANSA flies direct between San José and Liberia daily. The airline lists the flight at about 50 minutes and says it may run up to eight flights a day depending on the season (SANSA, Liberia route page, checked 29 October 2026). Small domestic planes have tight baggage limits, so check SANSA's rules for your fare before you pack.

Take the bus. Pulmitan de Liberia runs the public bus between San José and Liberia, with departures through the day. It is the cheapest way north and the slowest, and it ends at the bus terminal in Liberia town, not at the airport. Pack light and plan on a long travel day.

Drive or ride the road. Route 1, the Interamericana, carries you most of the way north. It is a long half-day in the car, and the start through San José traffic is often the slowest part. If you are heading to a beach rather than to Liberia itself, you can skip the town altogether: our shared shuttle from SJO goes straight to Tamarindo (from $61 per person), with a morning and an afternoon departure.

Crossing to Nicaragua: Liberia to San Juan del Sur

Liberia is the last big Costa Rican town before the Peñas Blancas border, so it is the natural jumping-off point for San Juan del Sur. Our shared shuttle from Liberia to San Juan del Sur (from $50 per person) picks you up at your hotel. Its three-hour schedule includes the border crossing. Bring your passport, and check Nicaragua's current entry requirements before the day you travel. The same shuttle runs back from San Juan del Sur to Liberia (from $50 per person).

Leaving: getting back to Liberia airport

Flights home from LIR are where timing gets tight, because a missed flight costs more than any transfer. Book the ride to the airport when you book the ride in.

Back to LIR from Time Private Shared
Playa Hermosa about 30 min from $72 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playas del Coco about 30 min from $84 per vehicle (up to 4)
Papagayo Gulf about 40 min from $78 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playa Conchal about 1 h from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
Playa Flamingo about 1 h 15 min from $106 per vehicle (up to 4)
Tamarindo about 1 h 15 min private, 1 h 30 min shared from $120 per vehicle (up to 4) from $35 per person
Nosara about 2 h 30 min from $204 per vehicle (up to 4)
Arenal / La Fortuna about 3 h private, 3 h 30 min shared from $228 per vehicle (up to 4) from $62 per person
Monteverde about 3 h private, 3 h 30 min shared from $216 per vehicle (up to 4) from $62 per person
Santa Teresa / Montezuma about 4 h 30 min from $324 per vehicle (up to 4)

The Arenal and Monteverde shared shuttles to Liberia run once a day, and we confirm the exact pickup time after booking. On a flight day with no margin, the private transfer leaves when you choose. For the road up to the cloud forest itself, our piece on getting to Monteverde covers the two bridges MOPT opened this year.

If the shuttle timing means a night in Liberia before you head inland, our guide to where to stay when you land at Liberia compares the airport strip with the town. The Cañón de la Vieja canyon outside town fills the next morning well, with a zipline over the river (from $56 per person) or a horseback and canopy combo (from $76 per person).
