Dien Bien Phu is a city in the mountainous far northwest of Vietnam and the capital of Dien Bien Province, set in the broad Muong Thanh valley near the border with Laos. The surrounding valley is a fertile rice-growing area home to Thai and other ethnic minority communities. Visitors come for its museums and preserved hilltop sites from the First Indochina War, as well as the scenery of the northwestern highlands.
