Where to Stay in Sierpe: the Village, a River Lodge, or Palmar
The boat to Drake Bay leaves at 11:30 in the morning, which means the night you need in Sierpe is the night before it.
Sierpe is a one night town, and almost nobody books the right night.
The Drake Bay Boat Shuttle leaves Sierpe at 11:30 a.m., every day, rain or shine, including holidays (Drake Bay Boat Shuttle schedule, read 21 October 2026). If you can be standing at the dock by 11, you do not need a bed here at all. If you are coming down from San Jose, Monteverde or Arenal on the same morning, you cannot be, and the night before the boat is the one that saves your trip.
Here is how the three bases compare once the 11:30 departure is the thing you are planning around.
| Base | Walk to the dock? | Book it when |
|---|---|---|
| Sierpe village riverfront | Yes, the hotels sit along the river by the dock | You arrive the evening before an 11:30 boat, or late in the day |
| A river lodge outside the village | No, you arrange a ride for mid morning | You want quiet water and birds, and you have a car |
| Palmar, up at the highway junction | No, it is a drive in | You are flying in or out of the regional strip, or you want a bank and a supermarket |

Do you actually need a night in Sierpe?
It depends entirely on where you sleep the night before. Sierpe is a long way down the Pacific coast from the airport, and the boat will not wait. From the central Pacific you can make the 11:30 on the day. From the Central Valley or anywhere north of it, you are either leaving in the dark or sleeping in Sierpe.
Our own transfer times give you the shape of it. San Jose airport to Sierpe runs about five hours door to door, from $372 per vehicle (up to 4). Manuel Antonio to Sierpe is roughly two, from $180 per vehicle (up to 4).
So from Manuel Antonio, Uvita or Dominical, a morning start works. From San Jose it means a pickup before dawn with no slack for a flat tire or a stopped truck, on a day you have already spent on a plane. That is the trip where the Sierpe night is worth more than the room costs.
The village riverfront: the base that walks to the boat
This is the one most people should book. Sierpe village is small and the hotels sit along the river within sight of where the boats tie up, so the morning of your boat involves breakfast and a short walk with your bags rather than a drive.
Our hotel records put Hotel Margarita Sierpe, Hotel Cocodrilo Sierpe and Hotel Oleaje Sereno in the village itself, along with several small guesthouses. Rooms here are simple. You are paying for the short walk between your bed and the dock, and on a morning with a boat to catch that is the right thing to pay for.
The village is also where the boat captains, the tour desks and the parking are, which matters if anything about your plan needs sorting out in person the night before.

A river lodge outside the village
A few places sit out along the water instead of in the village. In our records, Finca La Puesta del Sol is listed about seven kilometers from the ferry on the Drake Bay road, and Hotel Veragua River House sits off the Estero Azul bridge.
The trade is straightforward. You get river, birds and no road noise, and you give up the walk to the dock. If you take one of these, settle your ride to the boat when you book the room, not over breakfast.
This base suits the traveler who is spending two nights on the river and treating Sierpe as somewhere to be rather than somewhere to pass through. It does not suit a tight connection.
Palmar: the one for flights and errands
Palmar Norte and Palmar Sur sit up where the Sierpe road meets the highway. Our records list the La Muñequita Lodge properties there. It is not the river and it is not walkable to anything you came for, but it is the place with the services, and it is the side of the trip where the stone spheres are.
If you do land in Palmar with an afternoon spare, the Finca 6 sphere site is close by and it is shut one day a week. Our guide to the stone spheres near Sierpe has the opening days before you drive out there.

Where does the rental car sleep?
In Sierpe, in a paid spot, for as many nights as you are in Drake Bay. Hotels and riverfront businesses in the village sell parking by the night, and it is normally arranged with the room rather than on arrival. Ask two things when you book: whether the spot is fenced and watched, and what it costs for the number of nights you are gone, because the car sits there the whole time.
The alternative is driving yourself to Drake Bay. The last stretch of that road is unpaved and condition dependent, and it is not a thing to decide on the morning. Ask us first if you are considering it.
Or skip Sierpe and sleep in Drake Bay
Most travelers should. Sierpe is the doorway, Drake Bay is the room, and the boat sorts you by which stretch of coast your lodge is on.
The shuttle's published fares and run times from Sierpe, on the same schedule page read 21 October 2026:
| Where your lodge is | Fare per person | Time on the water |
|---|---|---|
| Drake Bay Center hotels | $20 | about 60 minutes |
| Caletas sector, including Copa de Arbol and Punta Marenco | $25 | about 75 minutes |
| Corcovado sector, including the Jaguar's Jungle Lodge | $30 | about 95 minutes |
The far sectors are mostly boat access only, which is the quiet people come for and also the reason a missed boat is a lost day. Corcovado sector lodges start their return run as early as 6:40 a.m., Drake Bay Center leaves at 7:30 and reaches Sierpe around 8:30, so you land back at the dock with a full driving day in front of you. That is why the second Sierpe night, the one after the boat, is the night nobody needs.

If you arrive with the afternoon free
The ride through the mangroves is the thing to spend it on, and it is worth saying that the shuttle is transport, not a tour. It moves at pace and does not stop for the crocodile on the bank or the roseate spoonbills in the shallows. A boat that goes out to look is a different trip.

Corcovado itself is booked from Drake Bay rather than from Sierpe, and the Sirena station day is the long one.

The short version
Book one night in Sierpe village, the night before your 11:30 boat, if you are arriving from San Jose or anywhere north. Park the rental in the village and pay for the nights you are away. Sleep the rest of the trip in Drake Bay, in the sector your lodge belongs to, and do not book a Sierpe night for the way home: the return boat has you back at the dock by mid morning.
Planning the same coast further north? Where to stay in Uvita covers the other half of this drive.
Tell us which lodge you have booked in Drake Bay and what time you land in Costa Rica, and we will tell you whether you need the Sierpe night or can make the boat on the day. Ask us. We know this stretch of road and we would rather you asked before the booking than after it. Pura Vida 🍃
