About

Ostional Wildlife Refuge

Why it’s special:
This refuge is one of only two places on Earth where the arribada phenomenon occurs: tens of thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles come ashore in synchronized mass nestings. It’s a bucket-list experience for wildlife lovers and happens mostly between July and December, often aligning with the new moon.

What to do:

  • Book a guided night tour to see nesting turtles (local guides only)
  • Visit in the early morning to witness hatchlings making their way to the sea
  • Learn about marine conservation efforts from local volunteers

Tips:

  • Bring a red-light flashlight (white light is not allowed)
  • Wear dark clothes and be quiet to avoid disturbing the turtles
  • Tours are often arranged through hotels or local cooperatives
