In Uvita, the Bus Drops You on the Highway. Plan the Last Kilometer First.
There is no bus called the Uvita bus, no airstrip, and no plaza to arrive in. Here is how to reach the Costa Ballena without a rental car, and how to cover the gap at the end.
The short answer
Four things reach Uvita: a Tracopa long-haul bus that sets you down on the coastal highway, a shared shuttle, a private transfer, or a car you drive yourself. A flight is not on the list, because Uvita has no airstrip. The part that catches people out is not the long haul from San Jose. It is the last kilometer, from wherever the highway leaves you to wherever you sleep.
So plan backwards. Settle the end of the journey first, then pick the ride that gets you to that point in daylight.
| Way in | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Tracopa bus | A long-distance service bound for Golfito, Paso Canoas or David that stops at Uvita on the way. Cheapest option, and the slowest. | Solo and budget travelers sleeping within reach of the highway |
| Shared shuttle | A tourist van running a fixed route with hotel pickup and drop-off at the other end | Couples who want the door-to-door part without the private price |
| Private transfer | Your own vehicle and driver, leaving at your hour rather than the van's | Anyone landing late, traveling with gear, or continuing south the same day |
| Rental car | Full freedom on the Costanera, and a parking problem at some park gates | Trips with several independent days off the highway |
Not sure which of those fits your arrival hour? Ask us, and tell us the flight number. That is a two-message conversation, not a quote form.
Why there is no bus called the Uvita bus
Travelers search "San Jose to Uvita bus", find nothing clean, and assume the connection does not exist. It does. It is simply not sold under that name.
Tracopa publishes its timetable by route, not by town. Uvita is a stop on services headed much further south, and the ones that take the coast are marked Costanera in the operator's own route finder. On Tracopa's published San Jose departures, the first coastal services of the day leave at 5:30 a.m. for Paso Canoas and 6:30 a.m. for Golfito, with a direct run to David at 7:30 a.m. The ticket window at the San Jose terminal opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. (tracopacr.com, Rutas y Horarios, read 12 October 2026.)
Two details from that same route finder are worth more than any blog's summary. First, Tracopa lists UVITA and UVITA CENTRO as two separate stops. They are not interchangeable, and the difference between them is exactly the last kilometer this article is about. Second, the operator's stop list includes entries like "ENTRADA VILLA LAPAS, RUTA 34", which tells you plainly what kind of stop these are: an entrance, on a highway, not a terminal.
Check your own date on Tracopa's route finder rather than trusting a screenshot. Schedules on this corridor move, and a bus that leaves eleven minutes after another one is the kind of thing a reprinted table gets wrong.
The last kilometer, which is the real question
Uvita is not gathered around a square. It is strung along the Costanera Sur, with turnoffs climbing inland towards houses and dropping seaward towards the sand. Your hotel is on one of those turnoffs. Your bus is on the highway.
That gap is small on a map and large with luggage at two in the afternoon. It is also the one variable no timetable can answer for you, because it depends entirely on which turnoff your booking sits on. Before you book a bed, find out how far it is from the highway and what covers that distance. We would rather have that conversation with you than read about it afterwards.

Getting to the park gate, and the fee nobody budgets
Marino Ballena has four official entrances, at Uvita, Colonia, Ballena and Piñuela, and SINAC lists all of them as opening off the coastal highway. There is no back way in. Whichever sector you choose, you are turning off Route 34 and going the rest on foot, in a taxi, or in your own car.
Three figures from SINAC's own park page, read on 12 October 2026, decide most Uvita days:
- Open every day, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Entry $6 for foreign non-residents, ₡1,000 for nationals and residents. Children under 11 and older adults do not pay.
- One ticket is valid for all four official sectors, per person, for that day.
That last line is the useful one. If you are carless and the Uvita sector gate is a long walk from your room, a different sector may be the shorter trip, and your ticket still works there. Sector hours on this park have been adjusted before, so confirm the closing time at the gate on the day you go.
Two more things SINAC publishes that change how you arrive. Parking appears in the services list for the Ballena sector only, which matters if you drive. And vehicles are not permitted on the beach at all, under articles 127 and 130 of traffic law 7331, so the sand is not a shortcut between sectors.
There are showers inside the park, and no drinking water. Bring it with you.

Do you need a rental car in Uvita?
Count your independent days, not your total days.
If you are here for the water, the car does very little. Boat tours leave from the beach and pick up locally, and the park gate is a short hop you can solve without owning a vehicle for a week.
If you want to spend several days wandering inland on your own schedule, towards the waterfalls and the ridge roads behind the coast, a car starts earning its keep. Those places sit up side roads, and a tour that includes transport is the alternative. Either answer is fine. The expensive mistake is renting a car for a week and leaving it in a hotel parking lot for five days of it, or skipping the car and then paying for six separate taxis.
Tell us the days you want to be independent and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you fall on.
Flying, and why it saves less than you think
Uvita has no airstrip. The closest paved strips on this coast are at Quepos to the north and Palmar Sur to the south, and both leave you a road transfer at the end of the flight. On the Osa Peninsula a domestic hop can save half a day. Coming to Uvita it often just adds a transfer and a check-in.
Domestic schedules here change with the season, so ask us to check the current timetable against your dates before you buy a leg you may not need.
The hour you arrive
Marino Ballena shuts at 4 p.m. per SINAC, so an arrival after mid-afternoon means your first park day is tomorrow. Build the plan around that rather than around the drive.
Season matters too. SINAC puts the dry months from mid-December to mid-April and the rainy season from mid-April to mid-December, and lists humpback whales arriving July to October, with whale watching in season from July to November. Green season on the Costa Ballena is genuinely lush and genuinely wet, and the road is the same road. Afternoon rain is the argument for arriving in the morning, not the argument against coming.
What to do next
Send us your landing airport, your landing hour, and the name of the place you have booked in Uvita. That is enough for us to tell you which bus or van actually works, and what covers the last kilometer at the end of it.
If you are coming through San Jose, your landing hour picks your ride out of SJO more than your budget does. If you are stopping on the way down, the bus to Jaco moved terminals and the last one is earlier than people expect. And if Uvita is a stepping stone towards Drake Bay, read whether you need to sleep in Sierpe first, because the boat leaves in the late morning.
Ask us anything about the route. Pura Vida. 🍃
