Getting to Jaco: Easy From SJO, a Long Day From Liberia

Every way into Jaco compared: shuttle, private driver, public bus, rental car, the water taxi from the Nicoya Peninsula, and why you can't fly in

Article · · 8 min read

Short answer: fly into San Jose (SJO) if Jaco is your beach. It is about two hours from the airport by road, and you can get there by shared shuttle, private driver, public bus or rental car. Liberia (LIR) is a different trip. Operators that sell the drive quote anywhere from three and a half to five and a half hours, and Interbus, a nationwide shared shuttle company, lists no Liberia to Jaco run at all. No scheduled airline flies into Jaco. The only way in by boat is the morning water taxi from the Nicoya Peninsula.

Jaco is the Pacific beach closest to Costa Rica's main airport, and most people choose it for exactly that reason. It works well as a first night, a last night, or a surf week that doesn't eat a day of driving. All of that depends on which airport you land at, so pick the airport before you pick the hotel.

Every way in, side by side

From Way in Time on the road What it costs
SJO airport Private transfer About 2 hours from $192 per vehicle (up to 4)
SJO airport Shared shuttle About 2.5 hours, with hotel stops from $51 per person
Downtown San Jose Public bus (Transportes Jaco) Roughly 2 hours, plus getting to the terminal Carrier's fare, paid at the counter or online
SJO airport Rental car About 2 hours, with tolls on Route 27 Rental company rate
LIR airport Private car or rental Operators quote 3.5 to 5.5 hours Ask us for a quote
Manuel Antonio / Quepos Private transfer About 1 hour from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Tambor Zuma Tours water taxi 1 hour crossing, plus shuttles Operator's fare

SJO times come from our own transfer schedules. The other sources are named in the sections below.

From SJO: four ways, and your landing time picks one

Juan Santamaria airport is in Alajuela, west of San Jose, and Jaco is the shortest beach run from it.

Private transfer. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign and tracks your flight, so a delayed landing doesn't leave you stranded. We schedule the ride at about two hours. The price covers the whole vehicle for up to four people, and groups of up to eight fit for an extra charge per person: from $192 per vehicle (up to 4). If you land after dark or with small children, this is the one to book.

Shared shuttle. You get a seat in an air-conditioned van with drop-off at your hotel. Our SJO to Jaco shuttle runs one morning and one afternoon departure a day. Departure times are approximate and we confirm your exact pickup after you book. Plan on about two and a half hours, because the van stops at other hotels: from $51 per person. If you land in the evening, that afternoon run has already left.

Public bus. Transportes Jaco runs the route, but the bus leaves from downtown San Jose and not from the airport. In 2025 it also moved terminals. We covered the current departure point, the full timetable and the 7:00 p.m. last bus in SJO to Jaco: the bus moved, and the last one leaves at 7 p.m.. It is the budget option if you land in the morning with light bags. It is the wrong choice if you land at dusk.

Rental car. Driving yourself makes sense if Jaco is one stop on a longer loop. The route uses Route 27, a toll road. Once you're in Jaco the town is walkable along the beach, and a car you only needed for the drive in will mostly stay parked. From Liberia: possible, but plan a whole day

A Liberia ticket can be cheaper or more convenient, and that is when the Jaco plan gets complicated. LIR is in Guanacaste, in the far northwest. Jaco is on the Central Pacific, south of Puntarenas. The drive follows the main highways south and then Route 34, the coastal highway, into Jaco. There is no ferry on the way.

Private transfer. Costa Rica Shuttles Bus, an operator that sells the route, says on its route page that it generally takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours, and its own FAQ on the same page says 4.5 to 5.5 (checked 29 October 2026). Take the longer figure as your plan. We don't list a fixed LIR to Jaco transfer in our catalogue, so tell us your flight and we will price it for your day.

Shared shuttle. Interbus publishes its full route table online. On 29 October 2026 it listed no shuttle from Liberia or any Guanacaste beach to Jaco. Smaller operators cover the corridor with few departures. EasyRide, for example, runs a Jaco to Liberia airport shuttle at 9:00 a.m. and quotes about five hours. Check any operator's current schedule before you book a flight around it.

Rental car. This is a long drive. Add the time it takes to clear immigration and collect the car, and you will want to leave LIR by early afternoon so you arrive in daylight.

Public bus. There is no direct bus. We wouldn't plan a landing day around public buses on this route.

If Jaco is your main beach and you haven't booked flights yet, compare fares into SJO before you commit to Liberia. If Liberia is fixed because you're starting in Guanacaste, Jaco fits better as a later stop on the way south than as your first night. Our guide to Liberia Airport to Tamarindo covers what LIR does well.

From another Costa Rica destination

Jaco sits in the middle of the Pacific coast, so it is an easy stop between the mountains and the south.

Route Shared shuttle (Interbus) Notes
Manuel Antonio to Jaco 08:30 and 12:30, about 1 h 15 min Private: from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
Jaco to Manuel Antonio No Interbus run listed Private: from $120 per vehicle (up to 4)
La Fortuna (Arenal) to Jaco 07:45, about 4 hours Jaco to La Fortuna leaves 10:00, about 3.5 hours
Monteverde to Jaco 08:00, about 3 hours Jaco to Monteverde leaves 14:45, about 2.5 hours
Jaco to San Jose 10:00 and 13:45, about 2.5 hours

Interbus times come from its published route table, checked 29 October 2026, and the operator lists every time as an estimate. Our own private transfers between Manuel Antonio and Jaco take about an hour. On the Manuel Antonio side you pick a pickup time between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

By boat: the water taxi across the Gulf of Nicoya

If you're coming from Montezuma, Santa Teresa or Tambor, you don't have to drive around the gulf or take the Puntarenas ferry. Zuma Tours runs a daily taxi boat between Tambor Bay and Playa Herradura, which it says is about 10 minutes from downtown Jaco. According to the operator's own page, checked 29 October 2026:

There is one crossing each way per day, in the morning. If the boat doesn't suit you, the land route uses the Puntarenas to Paquera ferry, covered in Getting to Santa Teresa: the ferry sails eight times a day.

Can you fly to Jaco?

No. Jaco has no airport with scheduled flights. The nearest domestic airport is Quepos (XQP), the town beside Manuel Antonio. Sansa flies San Jose to Quepos in about 30 minutes and runs daily flights, according to the airline's Quepos page. From Quepos it is roughly another hour by road back up to Jaco. Since the drive from SJO to Jaco is about two hours anyway, the flight rarely saves time unless Manuel Antonio is also on your trip.

Flight day: getting from Jaco back to the airport

Book this ride the day you arrive, not the night before you leave.

Flying home from Liberia? That's the long drive in reverse, so think about spending your last night in Guanacaste instead.

How we would choose

Start with the airport and the hour you land.

Land at SJO in the morning and every option is open, so choose on budget and comfort. Land in the afternoon and the shared shuttle or a private driver is easier than racing to the downtown bus. Land after dark and book a driver, so you start the next day in Jaco. Land at Liberia and treat the drive to Jaco as a full travel day, or rearrange the trip so Jaco comes later.

Send us your flight number, your dates and where you're staying in Jaco. We'll tell you what still runs that day and what we would book.
