Cahuita National Park protects one of the best coral reefs on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, and most of it sits in shallow, calm water just off the point. That makes it one of the easiest places in the country to put your face in the sea and see a living reef up close.
You leave by boat from Cahuita and head out to the reef with a bilingual guide. After a short safety briefing you slip into the water and follow your guide through coral gardens full of sea fans, sponges and tropical fish. On a good day you may also spot sea turtles, stingrays or a nurse shark resting on the bottom. No experience is needed, just the ability to swim in open water.
Back on shore there is fresh tropical fruit and time to relax while your guide talks about the park's marine ecosystem and the work being done to protect it.
