Horseback Riding Beach & Jungle (1.5 Hours)

This semi-private 1.5-hour ride is the perfect introduction to horseback riding on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, and a favorite with families and first-time riders.

The ride starts with about 400 m through the jungle down to the beach, then follows an old coconut-hauling path that weaves in and out of the rainforest and along the sand between Cocles and Punta Uva. Your guide explains the local flora and fauna along the way (you'll even taste a few jungle fruits and plants), and sloths, monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds are almost always spotted.

Unlike strict nose-to-tail rides that only walk, on the open stretches of beach you can step out of your comfort zone with a short trot or canter at the water's edge. Experienced riders can enjoy longer gallops. The horses use rope bridles, so most of your control comes from your legs.

Group size: semi-private, maximum 7 riders.

What to wear and bring

• Long pants or leggings are recommended if you want to trot or gallop (sand can chafe in shorts).
• Shoes are recommended, especially for kids; many adults love riding barefoot to feel the ocean spray.
• Leave the backpack behind — small saddle pockets carry essentials.
• A phone or small camera is great; your guide is happy to take photos for you.

We ride in light rain. In heavy storms the ride is rescheduled for safety.
