Bioluminescence Kayak in Drake Bay
An after-dark guided kayak in Bahia Drake, paddling through water that glows electric blue with bioluminescent plankton.
After the sun sets behind the Osa Peninsula, the sheltered water of Bahia Drake comes alive with light. Millions of bioluminescent plankton flash a brilliant electric blue whenever the surface is stirred, so every paddle stroke, every trailing finger, and every passing fish leaves a glowing trail through the dark.
Your guide meets you at the water's edge, fits you with a life vest, and runs through a short paddling briefing. The kayaks are stable and beginner friendly, and you head out in a small group onto calm water, far from town lights, where the glow shows at its brightest.
As your eyes adjust, the display builds: glowing wakes behind each blade, streaks of light from fish below, and on calm nights the chance to trail a hand through the water and watch the sea ignite. Your guide shares the science behind the phenomenon and the marine life of the bay as you paddle.
