Bioluminescence Kayak
A guided night kayak departing from the Paquera area, near Santa Teresa, through water that glows electric blue with bioluminescent plankton.

Santa Teresa is famous for its surf and its sunsets, but once darkness falls over the Nicoya Peninsula, the calm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya offer something even more memorable. Millions of bioluminescent plankton live here, and they flash a brilliant electric blue whenever the surface around them is stirred. Dip a paddle, trail a hand, or let a small wave roll off your bow, and the sea answers with swirling ribbons of living light.
Your evening begins at the water's edge in the Paquera area, on the sheltered gulf side of the peninsula, where your guide fits you with a life vest, runs through a simple paddling briefing, and checks who has kayaked before. The kayaks are stable and beginner friendly, so nerves settle quickly, and within minutes you are gliding out onto calm water as the last colors fade from the sky. This is a small group under the stars, away from bright lights, which is exactly the darkness bioluminescence needs to shine.
As your eyes adjust, the glow builds. Each stroke leaves a shining wake behind your blade, and fish darting beneath the kayak streak through the black like underwater shooting stars. Your guide shares the science behind the phenomenon, the marine life of the gulf, and why the display is stronger on some nights than others.
Here is what makes this bioluminescence kayak tour special:
Paddling through glowing blue water that lights up with every stroke
A knowledgeable local guide sharing the science and stories of the gulf
Stable, beginner friendly kayaks suitable for first time paddlers
Small groups for a calm, personal, uncrowded experience
Timing matters. Bioluminescence can only be seen in real darkness, so this tour does not run on full moon nights: the moonlight is bright enough to wash out the glow completely. The most dazzling displays come on moonless nights around the new moon, when nothing competes with the plankton. Even on dark nights, nature makes no promises and the intensity varies, but few paddlers come off the water without a story to tell.
Getting there: the tour departs from the Paquera area, roughly an hour's drive from Santa Teresa. Transportation is not included, so plan to drive yourself or arrange a transfer to the meeting point.

If you are spending a few days in Santa Teresa and want an evening that feels different from the usual sunset at the beach, check the lunar calendar, pick a dark night, and reserve your paddle through glowing water.
