Founded in the colonial era, it has a walkable historic downtown with eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings, museums, antique shops and restaurants. The area is closely tied to early American and Civil War history, and the surrounding battlefields of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park draw many visitors.
