It sits beside Derwentwater and is surrounded by fells such as Skiddaw, making it a long-established base for walking, climbing and boating. The town has a busy market square, a lakeside theatre and a pencil museum, and the prehistoric Castlerigg Stone Circle stands on a hill just outside it.
