Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland in the southwest Netherlands, on the former island of Walcheren. Its historic centre is dominated by the Abbey and its Lange Jan tower, and by a richly decorated Gothic town hall. A prosperous trading port in the age of the Dutch East India Company, it has canals, markets and museums that reward a relaxed day of walking.
