Matsumoto is a city in central Nagano Prefecture, Japan, set in a broad basin surrounded by the peaks of the Japanese Alps. It is best known for Matsumoto Castle, one of the country's finest surviving original castles, with a striking black keep. The city has a walkable old town with merchant streets, museums and hot spring areas nearby, and serves as a gateway to mountain destinations such as Kamikochi.
