Villefranche-sur-Mer is a seaside resort town in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region on the French Riviera. It is located just east of Nice and southwest of the Principality of Monaco, which is west of the French-Italian border. Its name translates into "Free City on Sea" in Old French.
