The 3-Day Arenal Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive, Breathe, Explore La Fortuna
Your shuttle drops you in La Fortuna mid-afternoon. Check in, get your bearings, and resist the urge to over-schedule today. Walk the town, grab a coffee at a local soda, and get your first full look at the volcano from the main street.
In the evening, head to a thermal hot spring resort. The geothermal pools here are the real deal — naturally heated water surrounded by jungle, often with views of the volcano glowing in the dark. Eco Termales and Baldi are two strong options at different price points.
Day 2: La Fortuna Waterfall + Arenal Hanging Bridges
Start early. The hike down to La Fortuna Waterfall takes about 20–30 minutes one way — 500 steps cut into the jungle hillside, with the roar of the falls getting louder with every switchback. The payoff is a 70-meter cascade dropping into a cold plunge pool. Swim if you can — most people don’t, and it’s unforgettable.
After lunch, head to Arenal Hanging Bridges for a guided walk through primary rainforest. This is one of the best birdwatching spots in the country — toucans, trogons, and hummingbirds are regulars. The suspension bridges swing gently above the canopy. Take your time here.

Day 3: Zip-Lining or White-Water Rafting, Then Depart

Day 4: Lake Arenal + Kayaking
Lake Arenal is one of the largest lakes in Central America and one of the least visited spots in the region. Kayak the shoreline in the early morning when the water is still and the volcano reflects perfectly in the surface. Windsurfing is also world-class here — Arenal consistently ranks among the top 10 windsurfing destinations globally.
The road around the lake winds through small farming towns, cattle ranches, and patches of dry forest that feel completely different from the jungle around La Fortuna. Rent a car or hire a local driver for the day.
Day 5: Night Wildlife Tour + Final Hot Springs
Costa Rica after dark is a completely different country. Night wildlife tours around Arenal regularly turn up two-toed sloths, caimans along the river, red-eyed tree frogs, Jesus Christ lizards, tarantulas, and more poison dart frogs than you can count. A good local guide makes all the difference — these animals are invisible without trained eyes.

Best Time to Visit Arenal
Dry season (December–April) brings clearer volcano views and more reliable weather for outdoor activities. This is peak season — book accommodations and tours in advance.
Green season (May–November) is when Arenal gets dramatic. The rainforest saturates to an impossible green, the waterfalls run full-force, and the mist swirling around the volcano creates scenes that feel cinematic. Wildlife activity peaks. Crowds thin. Prices drop. If you can handle afternoon rain, green season Arenal is actually spectacular.
